"To me, Eden felt like nothing else, like the real deal. It resided beyond doubt there in my feeling body, a knowing I kept to myself. I somehow understood that I could not talk about what I was experiencing. Forbidden. It propelled me; it was my reason for being human. When the construct of our civilization got to be too much, I could always count on the memory of Eden inside me, even when kindergarten rolled around.
The curriculum of learning and play might have been manageable, only it left no room for spontaneity. I’d been interned for a couple of months when one splendid autumn day, at recess, I pulled my pal Billy Fink aside and said, “Come on, let’s get out of here.”
